Art News
1. Modern Abstract paintings are back in fashion for 2024
Well at least according to this House & Garden article they are. The magazine says,
They’re more likely to “read as neutral and their less-obvious subject matter means they’re easy to live with long-term.”
This news is great if you’re an abstract artist, although they never went out of fashion here on the West Coast of the U.S.
2. Serious art collectors prefer young artists over dead ones
This is not the normal state of affairs.
In a recent auction at Christie’s in New York, buyers fought over the work of young and “unproven” artists (“wet paint” works as they are known in the trade) rather than investing in blue chip works by artists long deceased.
It's a good trend in my eyes.
3. Guerilla Girls took over the Tate gift shop
I am loving this takeover! And loving the concept of allowing an art collective to run riot in the gift shop.
You can buy a range of Guerilla Girls merch from the Tate here (they ship internationally). Personally, I’m going for the air freshener to hang in my car.
4. Frieze London 2023 was a load of tripe
Or so says journalist Jonathan Jones in his review of Frieze in the Guardian. I giggled at his review of this year’s Frieze which he describes as, “a graveyard of creativity for tasteless one percenters.”
5. National Museum of Women in the Arts re-opens
More museums of women in the arts, please!
The Washington DC museum went through a two-year, $65 million renovation, and recently re-opened its doors with an extra 4,500 square feet of space. How much of your art would fit into that square footage?!
I’m particularly intrigued by the new Home Maker Gallery that aims to “redefine domestic life and overturn traditional distinctions of quality and craft.” That’s a worthwhile mission.

That's a damning quote... lol ....“a graveyard of creativity for tasteless one percenters.”
