Welcome Private Viewers - and a warm welcome to new subscribers. Thank you for subscribing, it means the world to me that you supported my art writing. In this month’s Beyond Frida, I give you a quick round-up of art created by women that I’ve spotted and loved this month.
I’ve just returned from London where I spent many hours perusing vintage markets in Brick Lane. It was there that I spotted Zouluxiaoxin, a London-based, Chinese artist working in illustration, animation, and ceramics. I love the whimsical, playful nature of her work.
Next, an artist whose Instagram I’ve been drooling over: Louise Kaye. I’m a sucker for ceramics AND painted furniture, so when I saw these ceramic bowls sitting atop these cute painted stools, I was in heaven.
I’ve been thinking about portraiture and how I’d like to paint other women’s faces, and researching other portrait artists. I’m really enjoying Finnish artist, Jenni Hiltunen’s work at the moment: so fresh and loose.
When I was working in stitch, one of my s/heroes was British textile artist, Alice Kettle. Her work is immense in scale and photographs don’t do it justice, but here’s a heavily machine-stitched figurative piece that I love.
I’m passionate about raising awareness of other women artists and sharing their work with my (small but loyal) audience. That’s the goal of this Beyond Frida series. I choose artists who inspire me and have an aesthetic I enjoy.
I believe it’s VITAL that artist women uplift each other. We don’t need to always write about ourselves or post images of our work. We can be art advocates and art collectors as well as art makers.
By sharing art created by women, we can help correct the historical imbalance of women’s representation in the art world and give women the recognition they deserve. We can help direct attention, and therefore value, to artist women.
Is there an artist whose work you’d love to share? Drop her website or Instagram in the comments below and I’ll take a look. Include yourself!
Until next time.

Alice Wu, multidisciplinary artist who works with salvaged and repurposed materials. I am deeply drawn to her sculptural work. https://www.alicewu.us/
Lisa Levine, photographer. Her "Virtually No Place Like Home" series is especially poetic to me. I love the dark, documentary feel alongside image modifications that are not as superficial as they initially seem. https://www.lisalevinephoto.com/virtually-no-place-like-home
Susan Dory, primarily a painter. Her approach to revisiting her own work and how she harnesses evolution has inspired me, especially when she began cutting her canvas paintings. https://www.susandory.com/
Erin Wheeler, collage artist. She clearly got the memo that collage does not have to be rectangular or 2D, and lately she has been creating with scraps and painted papers sourced from other artists. https://www.erinmwheeler.com/
Aïda Mulneh's photography conveys a great deal of subtlety even though it presents with high visual drama. https://www.aidamuluneh.com/
@MelanieKatKing via instagram is amazing! She creates beautiful photos using plant based developers.
