A conversation with my two-year-old grandson.
Nana, draw!
Okay, Nana will draw. What do you want Nana to draw?
Track.
A track for Thomas?
Yeah.
Here we go, a long, wavy track for Thomas. What else do you want Nana to draw?
Fower.
A flower? Okay, let’s draw flowers.
(I hold up a red crayon.) What colour is this?
Green yellow!
This is red.
How many flowers has Nana drawn? Shall we count them?
Yeah. One, two, four, five! (There are three.)
What else do you want Nana to draw?
Fan! (My grandson is obsessed with anything that rotates: fans, windmills, cogs, wheels.)
Okay, hmmm, Nana needs to practise drawing fans, this one looks a bit wonky.
More fan. More fan!
More fans? Okay, let’s put fans on a hill by the side of the track.
Thomas track!
Yes! We drew a track for Thomas the Tank Engine!
The best bits of my art practice have nothing to do with galleries, exhibitions, or selling artwork. The best bits of my art practice are all about sharing the joy of making with others; they’re about showing the next generations what human hands can build without harming the Earth; they’re about connecting with loved ones through creativity.
May your Yuletide be filled with precious moments of creativity between you and those you love.
May we all remember that Art is Love and that building a better world for all requires that we love everyone on this planet as if they were family.
Until next time.
